VIA — Viability from Ideation to Adoption
In July 2026, we completed our project on “Designing a Tool to Assess the Viability of a Product – Drugs, Vaccines, Diagnostics – from Ideation to Adoption in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).” We developed a system for GAMRIF (Global Antimicrobial Resistance Innovation Fund) to measure and assess the viability of GAMRIF-funded Products in LMICs. GAMRIF is an Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded UK aid programme from the Department of Health and Social Care. GAMRIF supports innovative research in selected areas of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research and development aiming to help LMICs. GAMRIF has adopted a ‘One Health’ approach and funds the research and development of new health products (antimicrobial drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics tools) tailored to LMICs. The intended impact of any product heavily relies on the adequate adoption and proper use in LMICs, especially in low-resource settings. Based on systems-thinking, our tool VIA (Viability from Ideation to Adoption) would help GAMRIF to eliminate, reduce or manage the risks and better allocate funding to projects and products. VIA has three parts:
A Checklist to help developers and decision-makers to consider essential factors while designing, developing, funding the Product. The checklist covers broader issues for developers and decision-makers to consider, such as LMIC systems, external risks and opportunities, cultural, economic, and structural barriers.
An Animal Module to better capture the unique features specific to animal products.
A Viability Scale from “Very Likely to Fail” to “Very Likely to Succeed”
